There’s not a great deal to do on the San Blas islands – in a way, that’s the point. Much of the time you’ll be swimming, snorkelling or reading on the beach. Normally there will be day-trip or two, to a nearby island that offers something different; that could be a shipwreck to explore, or an area full of starfish. Meals will usually be rice and fish. Once the generator cuts out in the evenings, it’s time to bed down. As the better tour operators will tell you, when you visit the San Blas islands you are doing so as a guest of the Kuna – and they are an indigenous group, not a tourist operation. So the jeep that picks you up from Panama City might be late, or might make unscheduled stops. The water taxi at the port might take a while to turn up. The toilets will be very basic. And so on. Retro prints ruled the runways—bringing both major color and pattern to all the top collections. Serving up mod home decor realness, vintage wallpaper (and couch) prints were channeled in the form of suiting at Prada and Marc Jacobs. Christopher Kane opted for a more psychedelic wallpaper print in the form of spring dresses, while Etro and Alberta Ferretti delivered a more bohemian-print option.
You can’t participate in the ’70s trend without at least a little something suede. Or in this case, a lot of suede. The biggest labels are taking the lead: as Gabriela Hearst put on what she termed the first carbon-neutral fashion show, in New York, Gucci announced a goal of net carbon neutrality through a combination of reducing and offsetting all carbon emissions from its supply chain. Dior surrounded its runway with trees destined for replanting in Paris’s urban areas. Louis Vuitton kept things minimal, with bleached pine stadium seating sourced from sustainably managed pine forests in the Landes region of France which, it announced, would be repurposed after the show by the organisation ArtStock. If you have longed to explore a rainforest, then Taman Negara is your must visit destination in Malaysia. It is a national park which is believed to have been conserving a tropical rainforest which is 130 million years of age. The park offers boardwalk circuits (about 100 kms) that crosses through the longest rope walkway in the world. During your strenuous walk, you are expected to have the opportunity to sight some of the most bountiful wildlife and peek inside the lives of some indigenous tribes. Taman Negara is home to animals like the Malayan tiger, crab-eating macaque, Malayan gaur (seladang) and Indian elephant; and birds such such as great argus, red junglefowl and rare Malayan peacock-pheasant.
The Oriental Village in the upper northwest of Langkawi Island, near Pantai Kok, is the entrance for the cable-car ride, which takes visitors all the way up to Mount Mat Cincang, Langkawi’s second highest peak. Entering the village and passing through the pleasant oriental garden and souvenir shops, visitors make their payment at a counter before stepping onto an escalator which brings them to the cable-car pedestal. Sipadan, in the Celebes Sea, is a diver’s paradise. Malaysia’s only oceanic island, Sipadan was formed by living coral atop an extinct volcano cone. Because of rich marine life, it’s one of the best diving spots in the world. Sipadan has more than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of different corals, all waiting to be explored. Divers may come across hawksbill and green turtles, manta rays, schools of barracudas and whale sharks. The island also has nice sandy beaches.
